An abalone farm would be a nice change of pace right now, even if it meant dragging kelp by the ton from low-tide deposits and chopping it by hand to feed the little buggers. It seems that the only good thing in life really is having children. That is of course, unless you are lucky enough have children and do exactly what you want to in life, something creative, something to help your fellow man, anything besides working day in day out, sometimes at two or three jobs that you hate, only to make just enough money to barely pay the bills, and some of those probably paid late, like most of us. Working on an abalone farm and forgetting all about the miserable world outside would be a nice escape, at least for a while.
The abalone farm itself exists primarily because of these kinds of factors in human existence. Thoughtless people who consume them as though their numbers are as easily replenished as eggs or tomatoes, and business people who fish them and sell them with no regard to the effect on the environment or ecology associated with their existence, and a few forward thinking individuals who take it upon themselves to start an abalone farm in the interest of preserving the naturally existing populations of these creatures and also being able to make a sustainable living. For many people, being able to leave their cares behind and spend a few years working on an abalone farm would be like living in a utopia in comparison to the drudgery and depressing effects of just trying to survive nowadays in this world.
