The days of being able to buy abalone for a mere hundred dollars apiece are probably nearing an end. By all accounts, the world demand keeps increasing, while abalone populations, and nature's ability to replenish them, keep decreasing. Global warming promises to increase storm activity and intensity, one of the few causes of natural death for abalone, and as ocean temperatures rise, the overall availability of viable habitat for abalone will decline, as they tend to thrive in slightly cooler waters. In the future, if you want to buy abalone in a restaurant you will probably pay a few thousand dollars by the end of your meal. This is because rather than taking note of obvious signs that desire for the product and the availability of the product are headed for a collision course and doing something about it, consumers are instead busily going about trying to see how they can get more, and suppliers continue to look for ways around regulations and open up protected fisheries so they can sell more.
In typical fashion, humans are gleefully taking the existence of a unique, hundreds of millions of years old creature for granted, and ignoring the fact that most of the world's populations of abalone hang in a precarious balance, because they need to buy abalone. As if their lives would be irreparably damaged if they were to be required to eat two or three less abalone a week. People buy abalone at such a rapid rate worldwide that even if every abalone consumer were to reduce their consumption by this seemingly insignificant amount, it would have a huge effect on natural populations around the world. If some kind of creative and wide sweeping measures of this kind are not taken soon, about twenty years from now you might be looking at about fifty thousand per abalone, commercial fishing boats needing to be escorted by the Navy to avoid attacks from abalone pirates, and paramilitary poaching rings armed with AK-47's and rocket launchers to protect their catches.
